What initially drew me in is the writing style, the unfortunate fate of Ning's mother and sister, but with the glimmer of hope that is laid out in front of her. She is set out to the capital to present herself at the palace, after receiving a letter from the princess announcing the opportunity to be the next shénnóng-shī to serve in the court. The greatest honor, and one that has not presented itself in years.
Ning sets out on her journey, with so much yet to come. She has a little money to get started, yet a plethora of knowledge bestowed upon her by her mother. After reading the first look, I am certain I will read the rest and find out how Ning's journey unfolds, and what magic lies in store for her. There are a lot of questions yet to be answered and a lot of the story that is not yet clear, but I think that certainly is expected at this point and adds to the intrigue of the novel.
