A slow and melodramatic start, interesting premise

I found the beginning rather slow going, and the tone is gratingly melodramatic. I'm not entirely sure if the pace of the novel improves but the premise is interesting enough for me that I would give it a try nonetheless. The cover is a little cheesy relative to the contents, I think something less garishly pink and fairy world-like would have been much more appropriate.
