This excerpt piques my curiosity, which is mission number one for such things. McCreight’s style is solid, and the book’s premise gives her room to go beyond run-of-the mill thrillers. However, I found the phone exchange between Zach and Lizzie a bit off-putting. With it seeming to be the event that draws the protagonist into the plot (for the excerpt, at least), having a male character badger a female one into working on his behalf is not the best look.
