One of my favorite plays I have seen live in Kansas City was a Huck Finn Adventure and I love this retelling of the classic tale. Xiang is fearless and is always seeking the approval of her mother who is always on adventures herself rather than raising her child. Xiang didn't have a father either and her mother was able to do a lot as a widow so it only makes since that Xiang would run off to the sea to try and find a treasure of her own even if her father would have want her to stay safe at home.
Xiang's mother thinks that maybe she could be safe in the city but she also worries about her becoming an Opium addict or succumbing to other pleasures. I find this part confusing because Xiang's mother is also helping supply the community with opium?! Xiang has a lot to figure out but her mother seems to be the one making most of the decisions...first being that Xiang should move away from the village and into the city to find better marriage suitors for her future.
