I was immediately drawn in by the intense circumstances aboard the small fishing vessel as it was being tossed about in a raging storm at sea. The descriptive writing made me feel as if I, too, were onboard along with Anh, her family and crew as they tried to regain control of the boat.

When the story shifted to Anh and her brother being comforted by their mother retelling the great historical adventures of pirates that once sailed the seas and gained control over the region, I knew I wanted to journey along and learn more of this great adventure.

As the story moves ahead in time and we are introduced to Xiang dreaming and gazing through her spyhole in wonderment at the vast sea and all that it may hold for her, it is apparent that she has a yearning to experience lands beyond her home. I felt as if I had to know what lay ahead for Xiang.

The cover art is beautifully illustrated and the sea dragon, ships, and the sword-wielding young women gave me the sense of imaginative adventure.
