The story opens on the South China Sea in 1818 in the midst of a storm, and our main character Anh's enduring personality quickly shines through as she helps with the ship as its battered by the sea. You easily get a sense of relationships and the love between Anh and her family, her mother being captain of the ship. It compacts lots of information in only a few pages that welcome you breathlessly and beguilingly into the story.
The writing fits with a fun middle-grade adventure. The characters have strong personalities that you enjoy getting to know. There's imagination and dreaming, and I really enjoyed the preview I got to read.
