After reading the book’s synopsis, my hopes were high. Maybe the First Look excerpt was just too short, but I was left quite disappointed. The story had the familiar feel of many, MANY pieces of FanFiction that I have read over the years, with a main character who is overly rude, cynical, and bitter for seemingly no reason, and featuring a mother who is too terrible at being an adult to even be real. The main character, angry at the world, sets off within the first few pages to find a lost-long parent (who is probably also angry at the world.) However, I think that the book still has the potential to be an interesting read— after all, it is difficult to gauge the quality of a work in only 14 pages of text.
