When civilization was wiped out by a virus, a group of scientists known as the "Original Nine" created communities, such as Vispera, for their clones (Homo factus) to carry out the human race. Homo factus has perfected their genes over generations to ensure no defects of any kind threaten their future but in doing so has lost what it means to be human. Jack is the last of his kind, the only human among the Homo factus. When Jack is introduced into the community, his presence stirs unknown feelings among the clones including Althea-310, who has always felt different from her sisters. As Jack and Althea's relationship grows, their feelings become a threat and compromise their existence.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this novel but the premise had me hooked. I will say that for me, the first third of the book was a little hard to get into. It has a bit of a slow start but it really picks up after that and becomes quite interesting. In a community where the very things that make us human have been genetically erased Jack is the only true human that remains. Althea tries to make an effort to understand Jack, because she has never felt the same as the others and in doing so begins to change. In a world where everyone is the same, to be different is seen as a fault, and faults are discarded. I don't want to give too much away with this one but it has a bit of a "The Giver" feel to it but with more of a sci-fi element.
