I received an arc of this book from Bookish first in return for an honest review. The first thing I have to say about You’re Not Listening: What You’re Missing and Why it Matters was that I loved it far more than I expected too! Each section of this book was engaging and helped the reader understand different ways individuals today are having difficulty connecting with one another and what we can do to truly reconnect and be more attentive. As someone who works in the field of psychology I appreciated Kate Murphy’s mention of Carl Roger’s work on active listening. I also loved her inclusion that we don’t grow as people by talking about ourselves, but grow from listening and learning from others. Finally, I appreciated that Murphy included that we are not able to actively listen endlessly, but that we should be conscious of who we truly pay attention to and always ask more questions.
