What a difference it makes when you stop to really listen to what the other person is saying. Take the time to listen and not prepare what you are going to say. Also, don't try to come up with a situation to say you know what they mean and then turn it into your story instead. It doesn't take a lot of effort if you are serious about listening and wanting to give the feedback that the other person needs. It is very easy to slip back into prior bad listening, though, if you don't pay attention!
I deal with a lot of strangers every day and this book has taught me (at least I hope I have learned!) to stop telling them what I think they want to know and to hear them out first rather than presume to know what is in someone else's head. Hard work, but worth it!
