I was given an ARC of this book by the publisher in exchange for a review. My thoughts are 100% my own.

Are you a good listener? Most of us want to be, yet at the same time would probably admit we aren't. We live in a time where communication is easier than ever thanks to smartphones and social media. Conversation, on the other hand, is harder to come by. It's easy to talk. Listening takes practice, and most of us don't want to put in the effort. Despite this, we all have a desire to be heard, to really be listened to. Everyone has something to say; maybe it's time we start listening and enjoy what others have to say. Who knows what we'll discover?

You're Not Listening is a timely book. With suicide rates at an all-time high it's obvious not enough people are being truly listened too. Kate Murphy does an excellent job of explaining the science and psychology of how we hear, listen, and communicate. Thorough and engaging, it draws on the experiences of many world-class listeners: CIA agents, priests, bartenders, and furniture salesmen, to name a few.

Never boring, it manages to hold one's attention and get you thinking about how you can listen better. At least it certainly did for me. I consider myself a pretty good listener, but I learned a lot and see how I can do better. At about 230 pages it's a quick read, but an important on. Listening is vital for every relationship, without it people fall away and friendships end. When you aren't listened to, you feel lost. However, having someone who genuinely listens to can change lives.

I would highly recommend this You're Not Listening to anyone who has ever wanted to listen better, felt like they haven't been listened to, or just want to learn about how communication works. This book is for you, I think you'll enjoy it.
