Woven in moonlight follows Ximena, the decoy Condesa, a stand in for the last remaining Illustration royal. The Illustrians lost everything when the ursurper, Atoc, unleashed an army of ghosts on them, forcing them to leave their homes. Now Atoc demands the Condesa’s hand in marriage so Ximena must go in her place. This gives her the chance to take the ghost army for herself and put the real Condesa on the throne, however she soon sees there is a way to end Atoc’s rule without another war but it means betraying her Condesa.

This book felt so enchanting with really beautiful descriptions of Inkasia, based on Bolivia. I felt like I was in La Ciudad, it helped that I read this outside in the sun. Ximena was a great character to follow, there was a lot of character development as she learned more about what really happened the day the Illustraians were overthrown and that they weren’t as perfect as she was taught. The politics clearly reflected real events that have happened and brought light to them. There wasn’t a single side character that I didn’t love! Most of them were given backstories that made me care about them and I was glad to see the Llacsans also changing their perspectives of Illustrians once they met Ximena, the same way she changed her mind about them. There was also a romance that I loved!

There was really unique magic that I loved reading about. The Illustrians get their magic from the moon and stars so Ximena can weave thread from moonlight and Catalina can read the stars. There was also loads of other types from the Llacsans like blood magic and healing magic. I would have just liked the magic to be explained a bit more, where did it come from, why do they have it? It was a tiny bit confusing.

Overall though it’s an amazing book and perfect for Summer!
