The jacket synopsis of Wilder Girls is intriguing...girl's school on an island, quarantine, mysterious Tox virus, promised cure, and "braving the horrors". The book itself though falls short. The first half of the book hooks the reader with descriptions of Tox infestation and relationships between various girls on the island. The primary character, Hetty, is friends (and perhaps more in the future) with Byatt and Reese. They protect each other, yet have extreme ups and downs with how they react to one another. The second half adds a little more mystery and adventure but somehow lacks an urgency. It ends with a few sentences that could make this book timely...Tox caused by climate change. I wanted to fall in love with this story, and then I didn't.
