The Tox has found a home on Raxter Island, an island in upper Maine where a private girls school was built. It's a small school, only around 150 students. In 18 months over half of them and most of their teachers have died from the Tox. The school, the entire island was quarantined when the Tox first showed up. So far, no cure has been discovered. The Tox itself hasn't been completely explained. How does it operate? What even is it? How can it change the life, not just the girls but the plants and animals on the island?
When we join the story, 18 months or so have passed. The Tox may have been on the island longer, infecting the planes and smaller animals first. Life has settled down some. You get your first attack, called a flare, and you begin to change. Some of those changes are immediately fatal. Some changes let you live with a handicap. After a while you may have a second flare, which is always worse. Some girls have a third flare. No one has lived long enough to have a fourth.
This is an apocalyptic story, a favorite genre of mine. I enjoyed all the strange plant and animal life the Tox has produced. Apocalyptic fiction readers, here is a joy for you to feast on.
