This has gotten comparisons to "Lord of the Flies," and it's very clear. Set on an island all-girls boarding school, a mysterious infection has spent thought the school and causes weird body modifications on all inhabitants. Big trigger warning for body horror and eye gore as the author does not tread lightly. The concept is fascinating and disgusting and a stand out among YA horror/thrillers. There is also the promise of queer characters in the first chapters, but it is clear the focus will be on this infection, "The Tox."

Hetty has a lot of promise, as do all the characters, especially with the mentality of caring about yourself before others, but also needing others to survive. There's something impactful reading about a group of friends, then having describe them physically fight for food before going back to relative normality.
