Raw Feminism at it's best!
“It’s like that, with all of us here. Sick, strange, and we don’t know why. Things bursting out of us, bits missing and pieces sloughing off, and then we harden and smooth over.”
I'm not gonna lie, I honestly grabbed this book because of the beautiful cover! The story-line actually intrigued me though, and this book did not disappoint! This is the story of girls left on an island in quarantine at Raxter School for Girls. A disease "the Tox" has taken over the entire island, the plants, trees, animals, and the girls and teachers at this school. The CDC and US Navy sends them food and supplies and promised to find a cure. It's been a year and a half and they still have no answers...
Rory Power's writing was so raw and descriptive. She did not hold anything back with her gory and violent scenes, it was like watching a horror movie with blood and guts everywhere, but I loved it! This book shows that girls can get dirty, they can be strong and endure hardship just as much as any boy could. The cover is also perfect, I think it represents how the land has become part of them but it is also what is spiraling them out of control. The way these girls just accept the changes and terrible things that are happening to them but also still feel compassion and guilt and LOVE for one another, shows how human they still are. These girls are tough, especially Hetty. Hetty is a relatable character that is constantly second guessing herself and has low confidence, but she kicks ass when it comes to protecting her girls!
This book screams feminism and I entirely admire it. I aspire to be as bad ass as these girls if I was ever in a similar situation. This is a story about survival; survival of the fittest.
