Not What I Was Hoping For

Wilder Girls by Rory Power had all the feminist dystopian elements to be a book I'd love... but it fell completely flat for me.

I picked this one up early on during my state's COVID-19 shelter in place order, thinking the fantasy world would mirror reality in that scary but exciting way fiction can grip you. The premise of this story had me so excited: an all-girls boarding school (always here for that), a mysterious toxin forces everyone into quarantine (yikes, tell me more), hints of something sinister beneath the words and actions of everyone in authority (resist!), feminist ideals (YES), and a lesbian subplot (here for it every time). Too bad every one of those things left me yawning and wanting more.

At least the cover art is dreamy as all get out!
