If I had to describe this book in a snappy tagline, I would say that it's "Annihilation for teen wlw". The body horror has the same kind of feel as Annihilation, and although I feel like the plot lacked structure and ultimately meandered around a bit too much, lacking in tension, the ideas presented were very interesting, and I liked the characters. I would not compare this book to Lord of the Flies, and the comparison would honestly never even cross my mind. Adults were present throughout the novel and it was not about the destruction of upper-class social propriety, rather the focus was much more on explorations of autonomy and humanity. I also enjoyed the setting very much, being familiar with coastal Maine myself and having family members who are Navy veterans from the area. I would highly recommend this book to teenagers who are interested in both sci-fi and horror.
