I’ve just finished Wilder Girls, and I have so many thoughts that may be hard to sum up. This review will have spoilers and I will put an alert right before where it happens. To start I want to say that I hope this is the finalized cover because this is one of the most beautiful covers I’ve seen in a while. The artist that did it paid so much attention to detail. Overall I’ve given this book a hesitant 4 star rating. As for the writing itself it was incredibly well written. The book was paced well where you could keep a grasp of what’s going on easily without ever getting bored. The plot and concept was unlike anything I’ve seen before and it was beautifully unpredictable. But I only gave it four stars for this reason: (SPOILERS AHEAD DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE BOOK)
The ending was so abrupt and confusing, it left me with an incomplete feeling. I’m not only confused as to what happened with Hetty at the very end but they didn’t explain anything about the mainland and testing further. It felt as if there was a lot of bouncing around without cause. Not to mention it didn't sit right with me that they left all the other girls on the island to die. It might’ve better if the reader at least got to see the trio go to the mainland and try to save them even if it was a futile effort. I would never ask for a happy ending from a book with an apocalyptic setting but I wish it didn’t have an ending that felt unfinished. It all happened so fast without much explanation.
Other than that the book was really intriguing and the author has a lot of promise. I’m looking forward to purchasing an official copy of Wilder Girls and any future works by Rory Power. I’m also very thankful to have been able to receive and ARC of this novel.
