Hetty was at a boarding school, Raxter, when "The Tox" came. It was making everyone sick and many died. Others mutated. The CDC didn't know what to do so the girls and teachers were quarantined, with occasional supply drop offs. The problem was, it changed the animals on the island, too, so the girls had to be able to use guns and defend their school from the violent, mutated, animals. This whole time, they just waited for the CDC to find a solution... it's been three years.

I don't even know where to start with this book. My mind is absolutely blown. It's one of those books that's written so you feel pretty clueless at the beginning. Slowly, information begins to unfold, but the reader never finds out what's going on really until the end. We remain as lost as the girls in the school.

I loved the "girl-power" in this book. I loved that these girls were so scrappy and fought for everything they had. I loved Hetty and the friendships she had with Reese and Byatt. They are such an awesome group. They fight against and for each other. That is, until Hetty makes Boat Shift. This is the coveted job of leaving the school gates and walking through the woods to the boat dock to pick up the supplies. The problem is - the animals want to kill you. When Hetty is assigned to Boat Shift, the friendship dynamics change and secrets are discovered.

The ending is often talked about being terrible. I read the last few pages about 4 times last night trying to understand. I have an idea in my head of what happened, but I could have used about 30-50 more pages for better understanding.

This book was intense. It had some incredibly gross parts, but it was overall a story of girls who had to learn to be self-reliant, while learning who to trust. It's a story of friendship and overcoming crazy odds! It's a story of secrets and life or death situations.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it's going to be with me for a long time. I'm giving this one four stars.
