Wilder Girls by Rory Power was an intense and dark story that definitely freaked me out.

The first thing that drew me to Wilder Girls was the awesome, creepy cover.  I just knew this was going to be an interesting and intense story, and I was right.  Wilder Girls is set around a girls' boarding school on a remote island where a disease called the Tox has spread.  The girls have to fight for survival and the world is looking pretty darn bleak. Wilder Girls was definitely an intense and creepy read.

It's bad enough that these girls are kept from civilization on a remote island, but then things really go to hell when the Tox hits.  Strange things are happening to the girls' bodies.  Many of the girls and the teachers have died.  What is the Tox and how the heck did it get on this island?

The story is told from two perspectives: Hetty and Byatt.  They have been best friends since arriving on the island.  When Byatt goes missing, Hetty sets out to find her, along with their other friend, Reese.  The main characters, especially Hetty, were pretty fierce and I enjoyed reading from their point of views.

I loved the setting of this book.  The remote island made the atmosphere of the story very creepy.  Imagine being trapped on an island with some crazy disease spreading and no way out.  Yikes!  The story started off a little slow but the pace eventually picked up.  There's plenty of gore in this book, so if you're not a fan of gore, you might want to stay away from this one.  The writing gets very descriptive when describing what's happening to the girls as the Tox changes them.  I don't mind gore, but even I was getting a little grossed out in parts.

Even though I enjoyed most of the story as well as Rory Power's writing, I was not a fan of the ending of this book.  I wanted more from the ending and I did not find the conclusion very satisfying.  It just seemed to end too abruptly.  I kind of wish there will be a sequel (but I'm pretty sure this is a standalone).

Overall, Wilder Girls was a creepy story that I would recommend reading.  Prepare to be creeped out!
