I wanted to love this book more than I did, but there are so many unanswered questions and an ending that didn't leave me satisfied. The concept of the Tox is captivating, especially because each girl is affected in different ways and experience unexplained and unexpected "flare-ups" throughout the year. The bonds between Hetty, Byatt, and Reese are tender yet strong, the strands that connect them seem tenuous at times, although when those bonds are tested they prove to be incredibly resilient. The story about the girls is a strong one, but I was also curious about the explicit details of the Tox- such as where it came from, why not everyone has it, what exactly it is- and when those questions remained unanswered, I was left feeling unfulfilled. Overall, it was a great read that I mostly enjoyed, but I do wish there were more answers to soothe my troubled soul.
