Strong start and then uneven

I love the cover—it's stunning. It definitely sets the stage for the book. The premise and the excerpt I read were intriguing and I was lucky enough to win a copy through BookishFirst.

The story started out strong, then began to wander. It finally picked back up but never quite got back to its strong start. The character development was uneven, particularly for Sawyer. Certain plotlines were also unevenly developed and weren't always well connected. And some things that seemed important early on were not left hanging but almost dismissed and pushed aside as if they weren't important.

The author did a good job switching back and forth between 1925 and 2015. But in the end, I had to push myself to finish this book and was ultimately left disappointed by the ending. The "twist" wasn't a surprise and it didn't add anything. Disappointing is my one-word review.
