It’s 2015 and film student Sawyer is intent on interviewing 110 year old Honoree - who hobnobbed with famous film & music folks in the 1920s - in order to complete his thesis. Flashing back and forth between 2015 and 1925, big secrets are revealed as Honoree tells her story.

I will say as a matter of personal preference: I have finally realized that I don’t love this narrative style that alternates between a current and past storyline with a secret eventually revealed. I’m always much more interested in the historical storyline and I tend to find the buildup to the revelation of the secret annoying. But this is totally on me and nothing to do with the quality of this book.

Readers do like this narrative style will certainly enjoy this book! It’s fun but also harrowing to drop into the life of a Black dancer in 1920s Chicago. I would LOVE to see a screen adaptation!
