I'll start off by saying that I don't read a lot of historical fiction, especially adult historical fiction. With that being said, I found this to be quick read. I think this book is important to share the life of a 1920's African American woman. That part of history and culture is glossed over in history books, especially with how rich and lush the 1920's were with Prohibition, flapper dresses, gambling, etc. I felt like my eyes were opened to a whole new experience than what I had known. Honoree was a great character to follow along with. She made some questionable decisions and was faced with hardships, all in order to survive. I do wish the romance between her and the mysterious Ezekiel had been a little more in the forefront. I always want more romance. Without it, it seemed a little dry. I also liked the switchback between the modern times, with Sawyer, and the historical times with Honoree. Sawyer was an interesting character and I liked seeing his side of the story. Be ready for those twists at the end! I expected one, but not the other. It will keep you guessing to the conclusion.
