Flappers and Bootleggers
Honoree is over a 100 now, but there is one time in her life that holds more stories (and more memories) than any other time of her life. Sawyer, a young aspiring filmmaker, wants these stories to share with the world. And so, he seeks out Honoree to persuade her to share her stories with him and with the world. And share she does, stories of terror, triumph, fear, and regret. Most importantly, she shares with Sawyer a bit of himself he had long been missing.
I love historical fiction but so often they are tied to a narrative of real events that the author can only depart from so much. In this story however, the spirit and the feel of the 1920s is there, but the story isn't tied as tightly to real events. I feel like this gave the author a lot of latitude to really develop and explore her characters which she did beautifully. The book was well written and used language of the time without being difficult to understand. Each of the characters was so entwined with all of the others, none of them could be left oit and still have the depth of this story. Very excited to see what else this author has to offer in the future.
