I was really looking forward to reading this book. I loved the premise, that there was a historical mystery to solve around the world of 1920's jazz clubs in Chicago. And the historical parts were pretty great. I had to look up a few references I didn't understand, which was fine, as I love to learn new things and I really like learning about the 1920's. The setting in the story was dance clubs in Chicago, and I felt like the author did a pretty good job describing life for Black women during that time. The plot of the story had some problems for me though. I was confused about the timeline between characters living in Baton Rouge and Chicago, and sometimes the timelines didn't seem to add up correctly. It was hard to keep track of some of the side characters and their alliances in the crime world. It also felt like the story dragged in some sections. Overall, Sawyer's part of the story was strange, and felt like it was underdeveloped. A lot of things there felt unresolved, and like they were just thrown in. Overall, I was disappointed, it wasn't as great as I anticipated.
