Alternating from past (1925) to present, the story is told by Honoree in the past and Sawyer in the present. Sawyer is working on a documentary thesis of Oscar Micheaux and thinks that Honoree might have the answers he needs. But, the information doesn't come that easy, both Sawyer and Honoree must expose parts of their past they'd rather not.
