I thought “Wild Game” would be a banal tale of a highly dysfunctional family. It was much more. The mother in this true life story is so self-absorbed that it’s hard to imagine having the misfortune of being her only daughter. I can’t think of a more horrific upbringing than to be party to all of her mother’s duplicity since the age of 14. It is almost impossible to believe the this is a true story because the mother is so diabolical and has limited boundaries when it comes to her daughter.

The offer of motherly love contingent upon being complicit in lies, deceit, and subterfuge is heinous. This is an American horror story. My sympathies to the author Adrienne Brodeur. The book was really well-written.
