Mother chooses to make her daughter her confidant

Mothers are supposed to be parents, not use their children as confidants. Malabar was making a grievous error in confiding her adultery to her daughter and asking for her help. Rennie was only 14, only just now coming into her own confusing time of sexuality. Ted her boyfriend of only a short time had for the first time felt her breasts. She needed to keep this secret not only from her loving step-father Charles but her brother Peter. Not able to tell a friend just stuck with this to bear on her own. But Rennie was happy in her new role to be needed and wanted by her mother. Malabar had been depressed since Charles strokes and now she seemed to be filled with joy over Ben. The fact that Ben and Charles had been friends for over 50 years didn't seem to stop her. Also that she was betraying Lily, Ben's wife, her friend for a decade. I see nothing but danger ahead. I would like to read this book and find out what happened and also how this affected Rennie as an adult.
