An utterly enchanting slice-of-life novel that deftly mixes historical fiction, magical realism, and a dash of mystery. Weaving together a multitude of differing inner monologues and perspectives Verble creates a cohesive, character driven novel full of friendship, obsession, racial tension and loss.

Engaging in a plethora of topics that are as relevant to the characters as they are to readers today. There is a hard focus on generational trauma, erasure of Native peoples and cultures, a legacy of slavery and racial tension, elitism, spirituality and war trauma

My only qualm is that the novel is told over such a short period of time, with so many insightful yet differing voices that by the end I was just begging for more time with Two, Clive and Crawford. They were engaging and full of story just bursting at the seems to be told.

Overall, this was a compelling read that left me engaged and contemplative. The multiple perspectives that shape the novel ultimately lead to a wonderfully woven world full of the good, bad and ugly sides of human nature and US history.
