As a reader, being given the opportunity to sample books here on BookishFirst *feels* like it should solidify my choices, that I’ll always be going for the books that are just right for me. The opening of this was powerful and, as a lover of literary fiction wanting diverse reads and unique subject matter, I expected this to be a huge hit for me. Unfortunately, this was a cumbersome read. Literary is not equivalent to wordiness, but the two often seem to get conflated. In fact, I recently finished a piece of literary fiction that was slightly over 100 pages. It made its statement clearly without weighing me down with long, unnecessary passages. I proved not to be the right reader for When Two Feathers Fell From the Sky, as I felt it failed in keeping me engaged. I feel good literature should be impactful and immersive. It cannot accomplish the former if it doesn’t truly lure the reader in.
