I read the excerpt of When Two Feathers Fell from the Sky by Margaret Verble and was impressed by the way that the author established the tone of the story. A Native American mood was evoked through the language with its vivid metaphors, such as “the buffalo thundered” and their path was “beaten like a drum”. After a succinct history lesson to bring the reader up to speed to the time of our story, 1926, we (interestingly) jump into the details of a scene involving our protagonist in a suspenseful situation. The author seems to tease the reader by revealing the main character’s world in bits and pieces, rather than spoon-feeding us the facts in a sequential fashion. I enjoyed this approach and it had me wanting to learn more to fill in the gaps about “Two”, who seems to be a wonderfully, bad-ass independent woman. I was also a curious about the culture of the colorful performers in the Wild West show.
