The cover, right off, doesn't grab me. It is more like an event poster of a circus. And, given how people today feel about circuses, it's not the best look.

Sorry to say this sounds like one of those books where the author is trying far too much to reach out to different audiences without clearly defining the audience or the intent. The intro or prologue of the book essentially covers the colonization of the USA up to around 1926.

That is either good or bad, depending on how you feel. It almost feels like a political statement, what that statement is, is up to the reader. Is this book political or is it a tale of the Native performer? Is it a mystery?

I get why the author, who is a registered citizen of the Cherokee Nation, included the beginning. To me, it really didn't draw me into the story at all.

As far as the remainder of the first look, it felt disjointed in parts and didn't draw me in. I also wondered what genre this is - is it general fiction, mystical, young adult?

Clearly this book isn't for me. There's nothing wrong with that at all, we don't connect with every single book.
