The prologue began with the two girls, Huda and Rania, swearing to be blood sisters. In itself, that is intriguing. Where will this friendship take them? Will they remain close into adulthood?

Huda is working for the Australian embassy in Baghdad. This is during the Saddam Hussein era. She has to be cautious because the officers of the mukahaharat (sp) spy on people who associate with foreigners. They may want her to spy for them.

Rania has fallen on hard times. Her father passed away recently, her husband passed away several years ago in combat. She is trying to make ends meet by selling off her father's library. She has a daughter.

Ally comes to Baghdad with her husband, Tom, an Australian diplomat. His secretary is Huda. Ally seems to be a typical westerner. She doesn't understand that she can't roam around a foreign country without getting into trouble.
