“In Iraq, every friendship is a risk.”

I am SO HAPPY to bring this review to you all on publication day! When the Apricots Bloom by Gina Wilkinson follows three women in Iraq in 2002 - Huda, Rania, and Ally. Huda and Rania were childhood best friends all grown up and Ally is the wife of the Australian ambassador stationed in Iraq. That quote at the top is exactly what this book is about - the dangers of friendship, and really all relationships, in Iraq. Set in 2002, this is set in the time after the 9/11 attacks in New York and the paranoia and danger is extremely high, and affect each of these intersecting women’s stories is many ways.

I was entranced by this story. I thought I would like it, but I LOVED IT. I couldn’t wait to get back with my ladies and get into their stories. The amount that I don’t know about the internal politics in Iraq is unending, but I feel like I at least know a little more now. It is brutal, complicated, and intense at every turn. I am so sad this is a stand-alone book - I could follow these women through the rest of their lives.
