Right from the opening scenes, the reader is transported right to Baghdad. The writing is so descriptive and realistic; the author’s personal experiences are clear through every description of the markets, streets, and homes of the book.

The story reads as if it is historical fiction, written in the popular dual timeline style- a “current day” and a flash back to the main characters’ childhoods, but is unique in that both stories are largely a mystery until late in the book. What really set this story apart was its focus on Iraq under Saddam Hussein, a dark period that still seems to be under-depicted in current books and films.

I was so surprised to read that this was a debut and I look forward to many more books from Gina Wilkinson!! It was beautifully written, fast paced, and kept me hooked from beginning to end. I am so glad I had the chance to read it and will definitely be recommending it to friends!
