Plunged into the daily lives of three very different women living in Iraq under Saddam Hussein's rule, it seems inevitable from the beginning of this novel that catastrophe is looming -- but first, we learn about these women's personal histories and immediately get a sense of what each personally has at stake. As a result, I'm immediately invested in the choices they will make and want to know what will happen next. The artistic cover is beautiful, as are the descriptions of the city, making it easy to imagine being in that hot, sandy environment.
