Don’t let the playful title and cover image deceive you. This is a poignant, melancholy, pensive story about friendship, love, and loss of humans and canines.

Timing was difficult for me. When the book arrived, I’d just lost one of my dogs to a horrific, freak accident. I wasn’t in a good place emotionally, and I have to admit to avoiding this book for a couple of weeks. Even with a little distance, the content was difficult, the sadness a heavy weight. Fortunately, we’re given some splashes of humor to offset the sorrow.

The writing is vivid and engaging. I felt like I got to know Carol, a woman with terminal cancer, and Harry, her aging dog in need of a new home. The author also opens up about her own life and, of course, her dog Minnie, as well as those who came before.

When Harry Met Minnie is so much more than a memoir about dogs. This story goes to the heart of friendship, how it forms, what it means, and what we’re willing to sacrifice for love.
