This is a bittersweet story about friendship, love, and loss brought about but the singular love of a pet parent for their four-legged fur child. When Martha looses one of her Bull Terriers, she begins a search for a new companion for her remaining BT Minnie. Through a serendipitous series of events, Martha and Minnie meet Carol, who is dying of terminal cancer, and her geriatric BT Harry, along with their tribe of friends and chosen family.

I knew how this story was going to end. I knew its ending wouldn’t be the happily ever after that I usually seek in my reading material, but this is a perfect example of how the journey is more important than the destination. This is a book forming bonds, and the things we go through for those we love, whether they be two-legged or four-legged. Watching the friendship unfold between Martha and Carol, and subsequently between Martha and Carol’s friends as she gets sucked into their friend group, is an absolute joy to behold. It is hard to witness as Carol becomes steadily weaker throughout the book, but it is also beautiful to see the support she has through all of it. Seeing Harry and Minnie’s tentative begrudging acquaintance grow into a bond of love and companionship is so delightful, and the way in which Martha describes the quirks of the BT breed within each dog is delightful and comical at the same time.

This story was hard and painful and sometimes bleak, but it held so much love and happiness that it’s almost impossible to focus solely on those moments. When Harry Met Minnie was a stunning story of love, and I’m so glad I got the chance to read it.
