"What Big Teeth" is creepy and weird and yet oddly heartwarming. It might be about a family of monsters, but they are still a family.

After an 'incident' at her boarding school, Eleanor reluctantly returns to her family home. It's not easy to go back to her monstrous family. They are literal monsters. There are so many secrets in the Zarrin family household that her grandmother kept hidden to protect the family. When her grandmother gives her the responsibility of saving the family from its own secrets, Eleanor is I'll prepared. Will she be able to take her grandmother's role or will the family eat itself alive? Ending with questions is cliché, but it keeps me from telling you too much.

I love the unusual characters; there are werewolves, witches, and other creatures who are complex and unique. I love the descriptions of their home. It's creepy and cold to some, warm and welcoming to others. I love the writing. There's always the perfect amount of description- enough to give a good mental image and not so much as to get boring. Not many people can find that balance (I'm looking at you, Tolkien).

"What Big Teeth" is a time investment that pays off. I hope Szabo writes another novel. Finding a novel so engaging makes me want more.
