What Big Teeth is a gothic fantasy coming-of-age coming-of-monsters novel that is completely unlike anything I’ve ever read. It also has an exceptionally gorgeous cover. It’s a little like The House By The Cerulean Sea’s evil book twin (I mean this as extremely high praise). AND it’s a debut!

Eleanor returns home from boarding school under ~*mysterious*~ circumstances, but we know whatever happened was less than ideal. As she reunites with her strange family, who she barely remembers, she wrangles with feelings of being unwanted and out of place. Unexpected events put Eleanor in the position of needing to protect her family and decide what matters most to her, and quickly.

Here’s the thing: THIS IS NOT A WEREWOLF BOOK. (Mostly). THIS IS NOT A RED RIDING HOOD RETELLING. This really is a story all its own. The pacing is phenomenal - I had a hard time putting it down. Eleanor can be frustrating, but it’s such a satisfying ending (without being a neat little package) and the characters are all nuanced and fascinating. Some of the side characters I REALLY wanted more of (I love Rhys and Margaret and I want a whole book about them).

Definitely add it to your read list, buy it for your English classroom, get it for your 16-year old and/or 28 year old offspring.
