This was a very unique and creepy story. I was riveted and while the story flowed in untraditional ways I was able to go with that flow. Some families share talents like athletics or art. The Zarrin family is made of monsters. The prologue shows us a group of children running after an innocent boy, chasing him as wolves and monsters and it ends with one little girl feeling hungry, opening her mouth, and falling to the ground where her memory ends. Eleanor was sent away to boarding school even though no one in her family ever leaves and there she stays for years until she forgets what running barefoot through the Forrest feels like. This is the story of her return home. To magic she had forgotten and thrown into a family she no longer understands. This was a beautifully written story full of surrealism and magic. It’s also about a girl trying to figure out exactly who she is and where she may fit not only in her family but the world. This is a great debut and I hope to read more from Rose Szabo in the future.
