It's dark, it's engrossing, it's wild. I knew to expect monsters when I started reading this, I just didn't expect to love these monsters.

Eleanor comes back to her family, more like runs back home because of what she did. But why was she pushed away to a boarding school in the first place? She doesn't remember, and her family isn't sharing any of their secrets with her.

Eleanor's family is full of monsters, and we get a sense that she might be one too. But is she bad or good? How about the rest of her family? And when the only ally she seems to have, her grandmother, dies suddenly, she feels even more left out, lost and doomed within this monstrosity of a family. I say this, because literally we have all sorts of creatures.

What I really loved about this story was the writing. It was full on gothic - enchanting, engrossing, dark, mysterious. I just wished the mystery wasn't so confusing? It took a while to understand what is happening within this house, especially of what happened with Eleanor in the first place. I felt like too much was held back too long. But in the end it all came together nicely.

I read this in two goes (only because sleep is a must in this house) but I'm so looking forward to more books from this author.
