The author richly paints the Idaho winter landscape and harsh reality of Jack and his brothers' lives, trying to survive despite their situation in life. I really appreciated the almost-poetic flow to the short chapters and passages, adding a touch of beauty amid the dire starkness of their story.

Jack and Ava provide two distinct narrators and points of view (POV), however, I was uncertain who the omnipresent narrator at the beginning of many chapters was. Not a bit deal, but it distracted me throughout the novel, wondering if it was Death or a force or person representing Death.

There were numerous deep or insightful thoughts or questions sprinkled in the narrative, enriching the reading experience and allowing the reader to get into the characters' heads without being too obvious.

Excellent debut! I am looking forward to the sequel.
