Wow! This heart wrenching narrative definitely left its mark! It took me longer than usual to read because it is really quite dark. I have a hard time reading depressive books as it shifts my moods to the negative as well. However, this book was still beautifully written with intriguing and complex characters. Set in Idaho, in the bitter chill of winter, the harrowing tale starts out with seeing his mother hung and burying her in their backyard just a few pages in. It is gritty and raw and real. All of it. With suicide, murder, drug cartels, and more, it is worth mentioning that it may also be triggering for more than just simply being dark and depressing. Yet, the story is still so powerful, that I enjoyed it.
The relationships were so rich and I loved watching the depths that Jack would go through in order to save his brother, Matty. I also really enjoyed the relationship between Jack and Ava. It was short, but impactful.
Overall, a great story. Thank you Macmillian Publishers for sending me an advanced readers copy!
