I'm not sure what I was expecting but whatever it was, this exceeded it. And then some. The prose, narration, characters, everything about this book is so beautifully executed. This does not feel like a YA book and isn't really written like one either. The book tackles some heavy topics but so wonderfully so that I /felt/ everything and was so engaged I couldn't stop. The characters are also so multi-faceted and lovable.

This book hurts. It’s painful and intense, and you feel it. But it’s also a book about strength and love and I think that’s kind of the point of the title — what beauty there can be despite everything seeming so ugly and terrifying. The writing is poetic and so beautiful (it has to be, for you to feel everything the way you do with this book), and she really sets the tone and atmosphere so skillfully.

I adored this book and can’t wait for the rest of the series.
