When Jack and Matty's parents are no longer in the picture, Jack has to step up as primary caregiver for his younger brother, Matty. Their father is in prison and Jack wants to find the money that was left behind from his father's crime. A girl named Ava Bardem becomes part of Jack's life, whom Jack met in school.

I honestly loved Anderson's richly layered characters and the picture she paints of wintry Idaho. It's such a fabulous backdrop that I was immersed immediately. She is a beautiful writer, I enjoyed the elements of suspense and mystery. I loved how Ava's voice begins each chapter, so in a way we were seeing her perspective more intimately even though she was more of a secondary character.

I found the story to be sad but beautiful. I enjoyed the relationships between Jack and Matty and between Jack and Ava. Jack was such a strong-willed teenager who would do anything to protect his younger brother. All of the imagery tied together in the end and the whole story made a lot of sense once you read the ending. Thank you Bookish First for the ARC. It took me a while to read (because life) but I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it!
