Wow! I am definitely hooked on this book. Jack and Matty live with their mother who is an addict in some extreme poverty. They barely have any food and rely on the small stove in the living room to keep them warm in the freezing cold of winter. Jack will do anything to protect his little brother including lying to him when he finds his mother dead after school. He hides her in the backyard so no one would take them away. Jack must figure out what to do in order to keep them together and start buying food for them. Jack must grow up instantly. This story is so well written and tugs at your heart as these two boys survive the cold.
