This story didn’t amaze me, nor did I hate it. For me, it was a true middle of the road read. The character development was solid for some of the characters then lacking for others. At times the pacing worked, but then it would get a little wonky.

The world building was the best aspect of the book and I did love the prose the author wrote. I don’t think I’ll be running to finish this duology, but I would try another book from this author later on as her writing continues to grow.

That all said, if you haven't read a lot of Middle Eastern themed fantasy, I think you may enjoy this as an introductory! I feel I am well read in this sub genre, and can't help compare this story to some of my favorites such as City of Brass, Ember in the Ashes, Rebel of the Sands, etc. Those books had similar settings but immaculate plots and characters.

My book club read and discussed We Hunt the Flame and the majority of reviews were 3 to 4 stars.
